7 Bullet Points About Languages - Week 38
Hi everybody,
I hope your week was marvelous!
This past week was amazing for my Korean but not much for my other languages. I dove back into Genshin Impact in Korean and spent so much time on it I woke up one day thinking in Korean for the first few minutes before realizing it. I did enjoy my new second profile for Chinese and found full series on YouTube but will need to dig even more!
Alright, let's dive right in!
Each week, I share 7 things that could be useful to your learning odyssey. I hope they can help you improve your journey, tickle your curiosity, and inspire you to keep exploring.
One video: How To: YouTube Immersion Accounts — By Refold
I've been using YouTube for ages to watch videos in my target languages but never knew there was a way to separate two profiles with one mail account. I've been enjoying my Chinese profile for two weeks now. Having a profile for a specific language gives a lot better recommendations! Mind-blowing and very useful short guide I highly recommend!
One article I read: Fluent in 3 Months? The Truth. — By Bella Martin
These types of articles are just what I like. I loved Bella's debunking of what "fluency" means. She then gave clear opinions and takeaways with advice you can actually apply, even if it feels weird to you, such as reading a book out loud. A must-read!
One article I wrote: Here’s What You Should Try if You’ve Failed to Learn A Language
I've seen too many people leave the language learning world too soon and never come back. This piece was written as a way to help them find a new way back into it, and have fun improving. Hope you like it!
One podcast episode: #67 Mari Silvestrini on Energy and Momentum in Language Learning ― By Language Hacking
Another good episode from Benny Lewis and his co-host Shannon. I loved learning about Mari's life and all her tips to increase confidence in a new language. Her approach of "slow learning" is a great one!
One tool to try: Meditopia (iPhone & Android)
Ok. I know it's not a language learning app but it has 13 languages and there are a few free meditation sessions for all languages. I used it for Korean and even spent hours transcribing one sleeping meditation. Since then, I get exposure to the vocabulary almost every night! You could too!
One quote to ponder: “If you know many languages then you have many keys for a castle.” ― François-Marie Arouet
One new biweekly challenge: Answer 15 Questions in your target language
Let's answer a few questions this time. Write down 15 questions you'd like to be able to answer and then try to come up with answers. Depending on your level, this could be one simple sentence or a whole paragraph. Answer one a day (or 2-3 every other day) using a dictionary if need be, and then post them on Journaly or HiNative to get corrections.
1st week sum-up of challenge:
As mentioned above, I dove back into Genshin Impact this week and played it completely in Korean. While it was an amazing experience, it made me forget about the biweekly challenge every single day until the moment I got in bed. This means I didn't even answer one question yet. I guess that's why this is a biweekly challenge, to allow for a week off and some catch up the next!
